Puzzle Shank Galaxy

The story here is similar to Raiden’s Wooly World, but long preceding it.

One of my friends was playing The Last of Us, and he was getting rocked by the stealth section pictured in the video. His attempt ended with every zombie on the map swarming him at once, and the scene reminded me of a bar brawl in a western.

So I pulled out my iPod
–which at the time had the entire Super Mario Galaxy 2 OST on it–

and cranked Puzzle Plank Galaxy. It was a beautiful little moment, and it was difficult to recreate it in this video. I had to scour to find enough footage, but I’m cool on the result.

Bonus: There is a yet unreleased narrated version of this video that I made at 3:00 AM on 1 Aug 2015. Performed in one take with a $10 mic, not funny, and obviously ripped off from Dunkey, here it is:

Not much else to say, but I bet you didn’t notice it switches from Last of Us gameplay to Last of Us Remastered gameplay!

Super Mario 63D World

Now we’re goin’ back. I had the idea for this video in 2013.

This mashup is to blame. Once I realized that the Mario 3D World theme was so similar in composition to Bob-omb Battlefield, I couldn’t get the idea out of my head. But when I finally got around to editing the video, it didn’t 100% work, so I fudged it and made a few minor edits:

  • There’s a fade at 0:20, immediately followed by a suspiciously long power-up animation (I just looped the animation to adjust timing for a later part of the video). If you’ve played the game it’s a rather glaring edit, and I probably could have found a better option.
  • Obviously I added the big “HERE WE GO” at 0:55, and again, in retrospect I would have preferred to do something less tacky.
  • Other items of note… I’m no longer a fan of the zooms at 0:02 and 0:37, and I don’t know why I chose to start fading the video right as Mario touched the flagpole instead of after 1:35, when the logo slides in time to the music.

In the end, I consider it one of my weaker videos, but a good learning experience.

Raiden’s Wooly World

My masterpiece. This entire video was based off a moment I had on Christmas morning 2014. I got a copy of Smash Bros Wii U and a PS3 for Christmas that year. Naturally, I had to plug in the PS3 and try it out, and the first thing I downloaded was the demo for Metal Gear Rising.

I played that demo maybe 30 times over the next couple of hours, until I could S-rank the Blade Wolf boss fight no problem. At that point, I turned off the in-game OST and put on my own music. Namely, I turned on the Music Player app in Smash Bros Wii U and started playing Smash tracks.

Lo and behold, Yoshi’s Wooly World came on while I was doing that Blade Wolf fight, and I knew it was meant to be…

Fast forward 6 months, to 30 July 2015, when I posted both Majora’s Third Impact and Ode to the Enders. I was exhilerated, having finally posted some videos to Youtube, and I knew I had to continue. It didn’t take me long to settle on a subject matter.

Ode to the Enders

This one’s a doozy. I was working on a much larger, much more ambitious video about Zone of the Ender’s as a whole (largely inspired by Dunkey’s Halo videos), and I may still return to and finish it (because I like how a lot of it came out) but at the time it was clearly too much for me to be tackling.

I knew one of my talking points was going to be the crazy cliffhanger ending of ZoE1, in which the protagonist fights a nigh invincible rival. But then I watched Episodes 24, 25, and 26 of Evangelion 3 times each, and was struck with inspiration. I decided to edit the grand finale of my ZoE video before the rest of it was finished, and the product was Ode to the Enders. For those who don’t know, it’s based off an iconic scene (<-spoilers) from episode 24 of Evangelion, in which the protagonist fights a nigh invincible rival, to the tune of Ode to Joy. Truly, that scene is the greatest achievement of Lilin culture.

This is actually why I put emphasis on the dialogue in the first 30 seconds; in the larger context of the big video it made more sense, but
when I chopped off this little 2-minute clip and released it as a stand-alone video, those details got carried over.

Majora’s Third Impact

My first video! Majora’s Third Impact was the product of watching End of Evangelion 3 times in a row back-to-back. This was a case of sudden spontaneous inspiration. Once I started, I breezed through and finished in about an hour.

Of course, that shouldn’t be a surprise. If you watch the original source video linked below, you’ll see that I didn’t actually have to edit the original clip beyond 1 or 2 small cuts. But it still came out great!

Interesting fact: I ended up using Times New Roman Condensed for the Title Card and Credits, in order to emulate the look of the iconic Evangelion splash screens.

Because of this, the first video on my channel to actually feature TW Cen MT (the font I always use) is Ode to the Enders. However, there exists an early render of Majora’s Third Impact featuring that font! (pictured below)

Star Wars AMV

I had the idea for this video in January 2016, one month after The Force Awakens had come out, alongside the Suicide Squad Anime OP. At the time though, there was no way to make the video, because the movie wasn’t out on DVD or Blu-ray, so I decided to bump it back all the way to December. I ended up finishing the edit on Christmas Eve, and boy did it turn out perfect.

This might be a new personal favorite of mine, just because of how well everything linked together. I got Snow Halation, a song about snow and wintertime, to sync up flawlessly with a scene in the snow; plus, the scene is from Star Wars, and I already considered Star Wars a Christmas tradition; plus, I managed to upload it on Christmas day, as a “present” for my friends.

It does suck that it got copyright striked on Youtube, and I had to make a Vimeo account just for this video.

Brettimaeus | Official Trailer [HD]

This video arose out of a desire to be able to show normal people my videos. You see, when you just make a buncha weird nerd stuff for nerds, it gets difficult to explain what you’re making to the normies. Y’know, I needed something that didn’t make use of any pre-existing intellectual property, so my only option was to film myself. It’s technically not the first live action video on my channel. But the only other options are vacation videos, and tons of people make those. I needed something that really represents my weird style, while being short and dense. So this not only functions as a trailer for new subscribers on Youtube, but also as a trailer for real life people who want to kinda understand what I’m doing with my time.

I also just really liked the idea of formatting a Channel Trailer like a real film trailer. Getting some dramatic shots, sticking dramatic dialogue on top. The perfect chance to show off while also being honest and self-deprecating. I even riffed on some classic Youtube clichés, like the “Oh, I didn’t see you there,” line. Good stuff.

Interesting note: The testimonials at the end were all delivered live on-stream by my friends, who were unaware that they would be quoted.
